Supporting the community to consider and adopt a progressive urban design and re-development policy that will allow Lilydale to grow sustainably without compromising it’s hillside character.
Mesh was engaged by the Yarra Ranges Council to prepare an issues and opportunities paper and structure plan seeking to bring together a range of potential land use and structural changes for Lilydale and promote meaningful discussion among the entire Lilydale community. The plan ultimately achieved support for mid-rise development around the upgraded station and within the valley area where it would not interrupt valued long views of the hillside. Further innovative performance-based guidelines encouraged the delivery of green roofs and balconies that might intentionally contribute to future views.
In recent years there has been ongoing discussion over how the Lilydale town centre and Maroondah Highway can be improved. The status of the Lilydale Bypass and whether it will be delivered has affected Council’s ability to engage further with the community and to plan with certainty without first realising the full potential of Lilydale and the town centre.
