Mesh was engaged to prepare a streetscape masterplan for Mallacoota’s town centre Maurice Street.
Our approach focused on bringing in the landscape character of this coastal regional town into the town centre. Following the 2019 bushfires this area had gone through a great deal of loss, we wanted to celebrate the town’s resilience through this project.
Maurice Avenue is at the heart of Mallacoota and is the town centre where locals dine and shop. Our vision embodies the concept of a ‘mosaic’; which references the colourful geology of surrounding coastal areas. The streetscape upgrade will ensure better pedestrian and cyclist connectivity and accessibility across a current car dominant site. The mosaic theme has been translated through a vibrant and colourful ground plane, designed to guide pedestrians from the foreshore into the town centre safely. A key consideration of the project was to provide flexible gathering areas of varying scale to cater for peak and off-peak seasons.
